For same-sex couples that remain legally unmarried, unique planning strategies are critical when it comes to protecting your rights as a couple and as parents. It is imperative that proper estate documents are put in place to protect your rights while living, as well as when you are gone. The structure of these documents depends on your particular goals and situation. For same-sex couples that bear children, the rights of the paternal parent will change drastically based on your marital standing and how legal documents are structured.
